Extra Chilli, the anticipated sequel to Big Time Gaming’s groundbreaking ‘Bonanza’, is an insanely volatile video slot… with some insanely good win-potential. The game has up to 117-649-ways-to-win, and makes use of BTG’s famed ‘Win Reactions’ feature, which can produce multiple wins in a single spin. You also have the option to choose your own volatility in the bonus round, thanks to a Pie Gamble… and you can learn all about the slot in our Extra Chilli slot review.
Big Time Gaming set themselves an extremely high bar when they announced they were releasing Extra Chilli – Bonanza 2, as some coined it. It’s fair to say they more than delivered, and Extra Chilli is based in Mexico, with the ‘extra chilli’ representing hot ‘n spicy wins! Like Bonanza, Extra Chilli uses Big Time Gaming’s Megaways game engine. This means there’s six reels in total, and a varying number of rows and ways-to-win per spin.
The 6 reels can contain up to 7 rows each, and the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin. If all reels contain the maximum 7 rows, then the total number of ways-to-win (essentially paylines) increases to a whopping 117,649! This format of game makes it relatively easy to hit wins upwards of 500X your stake – and it’s not that uncommon to see even bigger hits, too.
Extra Chilli can be played from between 20p and £50 per spin (some operators may have different betting limits), and you may see it offered through SG Gaming, or Microgaming’s ‘Quickfire’ platforms too. Regardless of the company hosting the game, it’s always offered in HTML5, and this means it can be played from almost all mobile devices. All modern smartphones and tablets should have no problems running the game. Extra Chilli’s RTP varies between 96.15% and 96.28%.
Like its predecessor, Extra Chilli showcases some pretty impressive design work, and you’ll see the reels set in what looks to be a Mexican food market. On either side of the reels you’ll see stacks of garlic and chilli, and various food stands can be seen in the distance. The game’s really colourful, and it’s great to look at. There’s also a pretty funky soundtrack accompanying each spin, and you’ll hear a lot of Mexican-inspired vocals and instrumental pieces! One thing that is different, however, is that the extra row of symbols is under the reels in Extra Chilli. On each spin, this row shows four symbols, under reels 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Extra Chilli’s Symbols and Payouts
Extra Chilli uses a combination of low and high-value symbols. The low-paying ones are all playing card values, and include a 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. The top-paying symbols are chillies, and you’ll see a Green, Blue, Red, and Purple Chilli. The Purple Chilli is the top-paying symbol, awarding a total of 50X your bet for matching a 6-of-a-kind combo. The Red, Blue, and Green Chillies award 7.5X, 2X, and 2X your stake respectively for landing 6-of-a-kind combos.
The game’s wild symbol is a colourful bunch of Fireworks. This substitutes for all symbols bar the scatters, and it only appears on the row under the reels. The scatter symbol is represented by Gold ‘H’ ‘O’ and ‘T’ symbols. Landing HOT anywhere in view will trigger the Free Spins Bonus. Any additional scatters that land in view are represented by a ‘+4’ icon.
Bonuses and Features
There’s a fair bit going on in Extra Chilli, and you can read about the bonuses below.
Every win activates a ‘Win Reaction’, and this sees the winning symbols removed from the reels. New symbols then drop down to take their place, and this process continues for as long as there are wins.
If you manage to land the letters ‘H’ ‘O’ and ‘T’ anywhere in view, you’ll trigger the free-spins feature. This will award you with 8 free-spins. If you land any ‘+4’ symbols on the reels, you’ll be awarded an additional four free-spins.
Now, you can either start the feature with 8 free-spins, or you can gamble to try and increase the number of spins you get.
If you opt to gamble, you’re taken to a big wheel, and the first gamble is for 12 free-spins. If you win this gamble, you can then collect 12 free-spins, or try to gamble for 16 free-spins. If you lose, you get no spins.
Now, when you reach the 16-spins point, you can either walk away with 16 spins, or try to gamble for 20 free-spins. If you lose, you do get 8 spins at this point, so all is not lost.
Once you reach the 20-spin point, you can either collect the 20 spins, or try to gamble for 24. If you gamble and lose, you’ll receive 12 free-spins. If you win, you’ve reached the maximum number of spins, and the bonus will begin.
During the free-spins, each Win Reaction increases a multiplier by 1X – and this multiplier is unlimited, so it can get pretty big, pretty quickly!
It’s also possible to re-trigger more free-spins, and this is achieved when three or four of the Gold Pot symbols appear on the lower row of symbols. You are then awarded an additional 4 or 8 free-spins respectively.
Big Time Gaming incorporate a ‘Feature Buy’ into some of their slots, and this allows you to pay a price to enter the bonus round directly. In Extra Chilli, it costs you 50X your stake.
During the base-game, you can also land large ‘BTG’ symbols in view. When these land, the price of buying the feature decreases slightly. If the price reaches zero, the bonus will then trigger automatically.
We always get excited when a new Megaways game is released from Big Time Gaming – and Extra Chilli’s release was steeped in anticipation, as is was being called ‘Bonanza 2’. While the slot does contain many similar elements to Bonanza, BTG have definitely used a different kind of game engine. The game is ideal for players who found Bonanza a little too hard to bonus, as it allows you to buy straight into the bonus – and at a cost of 50X your stake, it’s not as dear as some of the other Feature Buy games we’ve seen either.
Be warned, however, that buying the feature on Extra Chilli can get very expensive. If you’re gambling the spins (which, let’s be honest – you should be) – you can quickly find that a losing run can slash your balance, so always go into the game with limits – and stick to them.
Extra Chilli is the ultimate version of an excellent game – and it’s the perfect marriage between BTG’s Megaways mechanic, and volatile video slots. The game’s extremely exciting, is capable of dishing out some massive wins, and it’s well-worth checking out if you haven’t had a chance to play it yet.
