Holy Diver is Big Time Gaming’s latest offering, and this highly-anticipated video slot is based around the song, Holy Diver, from American heavy metal band Dio. The game builds on some of BTG’s popular Megaways mechanic, and the game also allows you to ‘choose your own volatility level’, with three different Free Spins stages to collect. Find out all about it in our Holy Diver slot review.
Almost all of Big Time Gamin’s releases are met with insane levels of anticipation – and Holy Diver was no exception. For months, players discussed the game on various gambling-related forums, and it’s clear the momentum behind the Australian developer’s games is for good reason. We’ve already seen Big Time Gaming release licensed music-based games; Danger High Voltage and Gold are two that spring to mind. Holy Diver is based around the song (and studio album of the same name) by an American band known as Dio. Released in 1983, Holy Diver is catch, upbeat, and critically-acclaimed, and it’s great to listen to while playing slots!
Holy Diver is a 6-reel video slot with varying numbers of rows, and varying paylines. The reels display a different number of symbols on each spin, and the more symbols there are, the more ways-to-win there are. The maximum is a whopping 586,971-ways-to-win, and this offers some insane win-potential – especially when combined with the Free Spins multiplier! You can play the game from between 10p and £20 per spin, and like all of BTG’s latest releases, Holy Diver is fully mobile-optimized, so it can be played from most mobile devices. The game’s RTP varies between 96.39% and 96.54%.
Holy Diver certainly looks the part, and you’ll see the reels set against a sky backdrop, with a sun-filled heaven visible in the background. The game’s reels also have a special mini-screen at the bottom, and on each spin, you’ll notice a Knight walking along. You can learn more about how this works in the ‘bonuses and features’ section of this post. Fittingly, there’s a pretty decent musical soundtrack accompanying every spin, and the usual autoplay and volume on/off toggle is available too.
Holy Diver’s Symbols and Payouts
Holy Diver uses a combination of symbols. The game’s low-value symbols are represented by playing card values, and include a 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. Landing a 5-of-a-kind combo of the Ace symbol awards 1.5X your stake.
The game’s high-value symbols are represented by Big Time Gaming’s famed Gems, and you’ll see a Green, Blue, Red, and Purple Gem. The Purple is the top-paying symbol in the game, awarding 15X your stake for matching a 5-of-a-kind combo. There aren’t any wild symbols in the game, but occasionally, symbols do turn wild – you can learn more about this in the section below. Similarly, scatter symbols aren’t found on the reels – instead, you need to collect special gems. We’ll cover this below, too.
Bonuses and Features
Holy Diver has a ton of exciting features, and you can read all about them below.
Below the reels, you will notice an animated Knight walking and running along a path. Whenever he reaches a Treasure Chest, he will kick it open, which awards one of the following reel modifiers:
- Wild Symbol: One of the lower-value playing card symbols is transformed into a wild symbol for that spin. Any of that symbol that lands on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 will turn wild.
- Sword Bonus: Between one and three reels can turn fully wild. These reels also have a multiplier between 2X and 7X attached – and they multiply against one another. If you land three of the 7X wild reels, there’ll be a whopping 343X multiplier in play!
- Fireball Bonus: Up to 4 wild symbols are added to the reels at random. They can also turn adjacent symbols into wilds.
- Gem Symbol Bonus: The main bonus round is triggered by landing four gems – and these gems are found in the Treasure Chest. The knight can find between one and three gems in the Chest.
On the left-hand-side of the reels you will see a gem meter. In order to trigger the free-spins, you need to collect all four gems from the Treasure Chests. Once you manage to do so, you will trigger the ‘Level 1’ bonus.
You can then take the bonus, or proceed to level 2. To trigger the Level 2 bonus, you need to collect another four gems. Once you’ve done so, you can either take the Level 2 bonus, or proceed to Level 3.
Again, you need to collect four gems, and once you do, the Level 3 bonus will begin – this is the maximum bonus level you can reach.
All three of the bonus levels award 10 free-spins, and during the free-spins, any of the gem symbols that appear on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 turn wild. The difference between the three levels, is the multiplier.
On Level 1, all of the gem wilds are standard wilds. On Level 2, they’re all 2X wilds, and on Level 3, they’re all 3X wilds. There’s some massive potential on the 3X level, and it’s possible to hit some MEGA wins!
Now, during the bonus, you will see the Knight running below the reels again – but rather than kicking a Treasure Chest, you’ll see him battling a cloaked figure instead. If he wins the fight, he may collect a diamond – and this awards one additional free spin.
If he collects five diamonds in total, an extra 8 free-spins are awarded, and the number of Megaways also increases. With multiple re-triggers, it’s possible to increase the number of Megaways up to a whopping 586,789-ways-to-win!
Holy Diver was a big release for Big Time Gaming for a number of reasons. First, it’s their first game which offers potential for more than 117,649-ways-to-win. This makes it possible to hit some huge combos of ways-to-win during the bonus round – although it’s pretty hard to reach this stage, as you need multiple re-triggers. Second, it’s BTG’s first ‘investment’ game, so to speak, in that it’s up to YOU, the player, whether you take a bonus when it’s triggered, or wait it out in search of a better feature.
While we like the fact that you can control – essentially – the volatility of the bonus, we don’t like the length of time it can take to trigger the Level 3 Bonus. Realistically, this is the stage you’ll want to reach if you’re in search of the big bucks – but considering the bonus is more-than-capable of paying less than 50X, we don’t really feel it’s worth the hundreds (and potentially thousands) of spins necessary to reach it.Still, as we’ve already seen, Holy Diver can produce some monster hits – and it’s certainly a game that will appeal to players who’re in search of volatile, high-variance slots. Visually, the game looks great – and we love the fact it’s built around a branded music theme – something we’ve seen BTG do in other games like Gold and Danger High Voltage. Queen of Riches is another slot from the Aussie game developer you may want to check out. You can read all about it, and give it a play in demo in our Queen of Riches slot review.
