Bonanza is a ground-breaking video slot from Big Time Gaming, and this hugely volatile game offers some of the biggest win-potential of any slot in the world. Bonanza uses Big Time Gaming’s famed Megaways game engine, where there’s up to 117,649-ways-to-win, and each winning spin triggers the ‘Win Reaction’ feature. There’s also an exciting Free Spins Bonus, with an unlimited multiplier – and you can find out all about the game here, in our Bonanza slot review.
Bonanza is based around a mining theme, and while we’ve seen this kind of theme used by game developers in the past, Big Time Gaming really step things up and take it to the next level. The slot is built around a 6-reel format, but it uses Big Time Gaming’s Megaways game engine, which means the number of rows and ways-to-win changes on each spin.
Each of the 6 reels contains a varying number of symbols, randing between 2 and 7. This means the number of ways-to-win changes on each spin. (Paylines are redundant; wins are made by landing a winning number of symbols on adjacent paylines from left-to-right.) If each reel contains the maximum of 7 rows, the full 117-649-ways-to-win is seen, and this, already, can deliver some mega wins. In fact, it’s not uncommon to hit wins of 1,000X + in the base-game alone!
Bonanza can be played from between 20p and £20 per spin (some casinos now have higher betting limits too, when the game’s offered through Microgaming’s ‘Quickfire’ platform), and the game is fully mobile-optimized, meaning it can be played from both desktop and mobile devices. Bonanza’s RTP is fixied at 96%.
Like all of Big Time Gaming’s slots, Bonanza is made to look great, and you’ll see the reels are set within a mine. There’s a small miner’s cabin found to the left of the screen, and various rocks and shrubbery can be seen in the backdrop. You’ll also notice a row of symbols at the top of the screen that are carried out by mine carts. These symbols appear above reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, and add an extra layer of symbols to those rows, increasing the number of ways-to-win on each spin. There’s a pretty funky soundtrack accompanying each spin as well, though some players say it drives them crazy – personally, we love it!
Bonanza’s Symbols and Payouts
Bonanza’s low-value symbols are playing card values, and include a 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. The high-value symbols include Green, Blue, and Red Gems (these can appear stacked on all reels), and the highest-paying symbol is the Purple Diamond. The Purple Diamond pays for matching just 2-of-a-kind, and matching a 6-of-a-kind combo will award you 50X your stake.
Wild symbols only appear on the mine carts above the middle four reels, and are represented by a Stick of Dynamite. This substitutes for all other symbols, aside from the scatters, which include the letters G, O, L, and D. You need to land all four of these scatter symbols to trigger the Free Spins Bonus – any additional scatters that land are represented by a ‘+4’ icon.
Bonuses and Features
Bonanza is famed for its bonus round – and you can read all about it below.
During the base-game and the free-spins feature, all wins trigger the ‘Win Reactions’ feature. Any symbols which contribute towards a win explode, and disappear from the reels. New symbols then drop down to take their place, and any new wins are calculated and paid. The Win Reactions continue until a win can no longer be made.
To trigger the free-spins feature, you need to land G O L D anywhere in view on the reels. This will award you with 12 free-spins. If you manage to land any additional +5 symbols, you will begin the feature with an additional 5 free-spins for each extra scatter landed.
The free-spins take place on a new set of reels, and the Win Reactions feature plays a major part in the bonus, as – after each winning reaction – a multiplier increases by 1X. The multiplier continues increasing with each win reaction (there’s no limit on how high the multiplier can reach), and this allows for some massive win-potential.
It’s also possible to re-trigger more free-spins, and if three or four of the gold-carrying Minecarts appear on the top-row during the bonus, you’ll win an additional 5 or 10 free-spins respectively.
Bonanza is a game that’s truly changed online gambling. While it wasn’t Big Time Gaming’s first slot to utilise the Megaways game mechanic, it’s the one that popularised it – and today, we’re seeing multiple developers using BTG’s Megaways mechanic in their games too. Bonanza is fast-paced, action-packed and exciting – and the win-potential is… well, unlinited.
It’s possible to hit massive wins during the base-game if you’re lucky enough to spin with the full 117,649-ways-to-win active, and even if you don’t, the right symbol combos can see you walking away with wins worth upwards of 1,000X your stake. Naturally, even more potential lies within the bonus round, thanks to the unlimited multiplier free-spins. While landing the bonus is insanely hard (estimates put the bonus frequency at one in 450-odd spins), it’s usually pretty lucrative, and we’d say the average bonus payout is 100X your stake. It’s a volatile monster, but Bonanza is definitely worth playing – frankly, it’s no surprise to see this as Big Time Gaming’s most successful release in history. Book of Gods is another game from the Aussie game developer – and while it’s nowhere near as popular, it offers some good potential in both the base-game and the bonus. You can learn all about it – and play it in demo mode – on our Book of Gods slot review page.
